SSL Program Update - Alpine School & Gnurad-Gundidj Campuses for Term2 2020 and beyond. Print E-mail

COVID-19 Update

Dear students, parents, guardians, carers, families and colleagues

This applies to schools and families enrolled to attend Alpine and Gnurad-Gundidj campuses in term 2.

At this stage, all programs at the School for Student Leadership Campuses have been postponed. Please read on.

--

We are receiving enquiries about the impact of Covid19 on the potential operation of our programs in term 2 and beyond. Of course, the health and wellbeing of students and staff is our number one concern. We take direction from the Department of Education, Victorian and Australian Governments on the matter of operation or not.

The Premier has extended Stage 3 restrictions until midnight 11 May. As our program is a residential experience, the ability to socially isolate and distance is nearly impossible and unfeasible with Stage 3 restrictions. We cannot operate safely, compliantly and normally with the current advice.

However, please also note the following:

  • All Victorian Government Schools are following the Camps and Excursions advice.
    The advice is:
All camps scheduled to start from and including Tuesday 17 March must be postponed and rescheduled, or, if there is no other option, cancelled.

As a result, schools and students who were scheduled to attend in term 2 should be aware that there WILL NOT be a program at this stage.

We are waiting on advice from DET regarding the ongoing operation of our school in the current COVID19 emergency environment.

We are exploring a range of opportunities to provide remote learning, Webinars and other support for schools and students who would normally have participated in our program.

We will contact individual schools this week about their needs and desires to have our assistance with remote learning.

While there is no definite end point to COVID19 effects on our operation, we remain committed to enable students to participate in our programs in future if we can reschedule.

We will be making continued and ongoing assessments and taking regular advice from DET about if or when we can continue operations.

Gnurad-Gundidj Campus Term 2 2020 Program update as of March 26 2020 Print E-mail

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians, Carers, Families and Colleagues,

This applies to schools and families enrolled to attend The Alpine School and Gnurad-Gundidj campuses in Term 2, 2020.

We are receiving enquiries about the impact of Covid-19 on the potential operation of our programs in Term 2. Of course, the health and wellbeing of students and staff is our number one concern.

The Department of Education is taking advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer regarding the operation of schools during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

While no changes have been announced for Victorian government schools to the Term 2 program apart from an additional non-student day on 15th April, strong advice has been provided for schools to prepare for a possible transition to home and remote learning.

We will provide advice on any changes to the program, potential delays to opening, or postponements as soon as we have a definite decision.

As with all Government Schools we are preparing for the prospect of remote learning, and will endeavour to continue to build the leadership potential of young people in Victoria regardless of our mode of operation.

Yours sincerely,
Sean Fitzpatrick
Campus Principal, Gnurad-Gundidj Campus

Victoria's wilderness School for Student Leadership set to be expanded after 'excellent outcomes' Print E-mail

The School for Student Leadership Program and Year 9 students at the Snowy River Campus at Marlo featured in a segment on ABC News, aired Sunday March 5, 2017.

ABC News | Sun March 05 2017, by Jessica Longbottom

A wilderness adventure experience for Victorian public school students has been so successful it looks set to be expanded, giving more teenagers the chance to learn outdoor and leadership skills.

The Victorian Government is looking at establishing two new School for Student Leadership campuses in the Yarra Valley and the Grampians

They would be in addition to the three existing campuses: at Marlo in far east Gippsland, Mount Noorat in the western districts and Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps.

There are no regular classes at the schools. Instead, the students participate in outdoor activities, classes on problem solving and leadership activities.

"If building other campuses was driven by data alone, then we would have ten more campuses," Marlo campus principal Robyn Francis said.

The outcomes for our students are excellent

Approximately 540 year nine students are selected from public schools around the state every year to attend one of the campuses for approximately ten weeks. However that only works out to roughly 2 per cent of Victorian public school year nine students.

But give them an opportunity to do something for someone else and watch them shine. They're fantastic.

School For Student Leadership

School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions. There are four campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Alpine School Campus is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps. Snowy River Campus is near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. The third site is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, and is called Gnurad-Gundidj. After consultation with the local aboriginal community, this name represents both the indigenous name of the local area and an interpretation of the statement "belonging to this place". The fourth and most recently opened campus is Don Valley Campus, situated on land that was once known as Haining Farm in the Yarra Ranges.

Our school community acknowledges the Gunaikurnai, Bidawel and Gundijmara people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which our school campuses are built. We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their Elders past and present, and especially whose children attend our school.
