Gnurad Lessons - Bike Riding Print E-mail

At Gnurad Gundidj our state of the art Avanti Montari touring bikes allow us to have all sorts of adventures throughout the Western districts.

Firstly, the students complete a half-day Cycle-On Bike Ed lesson, which gives them all the basic skills to control a bike and ride in group formations. Students also complete a comprehensive servicing and maintenance induction and receive certification for their efforts. Once complete, the students can ride on a range of roads, trails and tracks throughout the surrounding countryside.

Popular biking options include rest day rides along the historic Timboon Rail Trail, along the Warrnambool coastline and throughout the inspiring Tower Hill flora and fauna reserve!

Our bikes are regularly used as an alternative means of transport to some off-campus activities, which helps to promote environmentally sustainable habits. Students are also known to ride in to nearby Noorat to collect the mail and shopping!

One of our key uses of the bikes is as part of the Gnurad Gundidj cycle tour expeditions. During expeditions students equip their panniers with all the required clothing, safety equipment and food for a day on the road. During their stay, the students complete a 2 and 3 day expedition throughout the Western Lakes and Wilderness region, taking in Lake Keilambete, Lake Elingamite and Lake Bullen Merri.

School For Student Leadership

School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions. There are four campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Alpine School Campus is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps. Snowy River Campus is near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. The third site is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, and is called Gnurad-Gundidj. After consultation with the local aboriginal community, this name represents both the indigenous name of the local area and an interpretation of the statement "belonging to this place". The fourth and most recently opened campus is Don Valley Campus, situated on land that was once known as Haining Farm in the Yarra Ranges.

Our school community acknowledges the Gunaikurnai, Bidawel and Gundijmara people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which our school campuses are built. We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their Elders past and present, and especially whose children attend our school.
